Group A spec, TRD 4A-GE 20V, definitely NOT available to the general public…  This 255hp power plant from group A racing field features non-VVTi cam gears with re-worked internals allowing race-tuned versions to rev to 11,000 rpm.  The engine is also full dry sump, external feed oiling system.  Iida took home the head and hand sanded all ports, and combustion chamber to mirror shine.  He claims he took over a month to finish the polishing.  The 3 angle valve adjustment was done on a Yasuda precision mill, which is accurate to 3 microns, as was the camshaft bearing bores.

The 4AGE Engine

Disclaimer: Horsepower figures will be a little off between my claims, Initial D's claims, and Wikipedia's claims. HP is measured differently in different countries, but it's still a good estimate.

If you don't know where to start on that page...

- Takumi's 86, before the engine swap, had a 4AGE 16 valve, nicknamed "Blue Top". A Blue Top has 112hp stock, but Bunta's modified his motor to have 150hp.

- Itsuki's 85 has the 3AU engine at the top of the page (83hp, lol). He later added an aftermarket turbo (3AUT).

- Wataru's 86 has the same 4AGE 16 valve "Blue Top" that Takumi started with. He also added an aftermarket turbo prior to the Shomaru battle(4AGTE).

- **Takumi's AE101 engine is a heavily modified version of the 4AGE 20 valve (the "Silver Top"). A stock, unbuilt Silver Top makes 160hp. Bunta's Silver Top is modified for Group A racing, boosting it up to 240hp. Project D modified it a bit further to it's current power output, 255hp (you might want to read the "Black Top" entry below). By the way, the "AE101" nickname used in Initial D is the actual chassis code for the specific Toyota Corolla that the Silver Top came out of.

- Wataru, after he blew his Turbocharger, switched to an aftermarket Supercharger. His motor is still the 16 valve "Blue Top", now designated 4AGZE.

- Now a note: Toyota makes a 4AGE motor with a stock supercharger attached to it (it comes with the first-gen MR2), also designated 4AGZE (145hp). However the stock supercharged motor is nicknamed a "Red Top" because the block of the motor is different from the "Blue Top". A Blue Top's engine block has 3 "ribs" whereas a Red Top's block has 7. The extra ribs are there for longevity and durability; a Supercharged Red Top will last longer on the road than the Supercharged Blue Top. The trade-off is base power: If you took the Superchargers off, a N/A Blue Top is faster (112hp) than an N/A Red Top (94hp).

- If you read the entire wiki page, you'll see an entry for a "Black Top" 4AGE 20 valve. This motor came with the AE111 Toyota Corolla, and makes 170hp stock. Aside from the small hp boost, the Black Top is more durable than the Silver Top. A Black Top tuned for Group A Racing like Takumi's engine would net somewhere close to 255hp. Now that said...I don't think Project D swapped Takumi's Silver Top for a Black Top, but I do think they used some Black Top parts (namely the Computer) to give Takumi's 86 the 15hp bump that it got.

**According to the wiki, the 240hp Formula Atlantic Engine was modified Blue Top, not a Silver Top as described in Initial D. This claim is also supported by the picture a few posts above this one. Take that with a grain of salt, and don't forget that ID is just a work of fiction...they're going to fudge some facts. To support the Silver Top claim, go back and watch 3rd Stage. The screenshots of the Formula Atlantic motor that Bunta has are of a Silver Top. Also watch 4th Stage; anytime you get a screenshot of the 86's engine bay, you can see that it's a Silver Top.


- And a last note: If you live in California (like I do), you cannot legally have a Silver Top or Black Top motor in your car. This is for emission reasons; Japan and the US have different emissions regulations, and since the Silver Top and Black Top were only built in Japan, they were not built with the emissions equipment required by law in the States. You'd never pass a smog test in California, to be blunt.

Yeah, Takumi's engine is from Group A Corolla Levin AE101, tuned by TRD Japan. That Formula Atlantic motor is tuned by TRD USA.

And about the difference of Silvertop and Blacktop is that the combustion chamber's have a different kind of shape. And surprize, Silvertop's combustion chamber is better that Blacktop's! Even if Blacktop has more power stock, the Silvertop is better from high-end tuning.

ผมดูครั้งแรกเมือตอนอายุยี่สิบ บอกตามตรงว่ารู้สึกว่าไม่ค่อยสนุก
มาดูอีกทีตอนสามสิบนิดๆ หลังจากขับรถเป็นแล้ว โอ้ มันสนุกดีจริงๆ
ผมเข้าใจว่าพระเอกในเรื่องขับ ฝาดำมาตลอดนะครับ
เพิ่งรู้วันนี้เองว่า ไม่ใช่ แล้วก็เพิ่งรู้ว่ารถพระเอกนี่สองร้อยกว่าม้าเลยเหรอครับ มิน่าแรงจริงๆ
